This incredibly rare Cartier dual time watch, appearing on the international market for the first time, gathers all the characteristics that make it a true gem for discerning collectors.

Commissioned in the 1970’s, it is believed that fewer than ten examples were ever produced, with some fine differences such as the metal and dial colours. This example is presented in the traditional configuration with a yellow gold case and silvered dial, providing the piece with a timeless elegance.

The case construction features details typical of the earlier production, most noticeably the eagle beak lugs. It is powered by two independent Jager-LeCoultre manual winding movements, with each crown placed vertically between the lugs. The brancards as well as the glass form a slight angle to subtly mark the separation between the two dials, increasing the readability of the watch. In the same effort, Cartier used different indexes for the two dials with quarter Roman indexes at 6 o’clock and bold baton quarter indexes at 12 o’clock.

According to the family tradition of the original owner, the watch was commissioned for a member of European noble family. The engraving on the case back “G.v.F” is thought to refer to Grafïn von F., a countess of a German aristocratic house. Furthermore, the watch displaying home and local times would have been used for travelling during the golden era of aviation history, at a time when the Concorde started its first commercial flights in 1976.

Years later, this dual time complication and the layout of this confidential series of watches certainly served as an inspiration to create several references, such as the Cintrée and the Tonneau dual time in the early 1990’s from the pre-CPCP collection and later on the Tank Louis and Tank à vis form the celebrated CPCP collection.

The present lot is preserved in superb condition, featuring its original elements, including its deployant buckle.

Combining exceptional rarity, historical significance, and elegant design, it represents a unique opportunity to acquire an important Cartier timepiece from one of the Maison’s most exclusive and elusive production periods.
